Of atheism, Hitchens has said:

The conversations sparked by the death of polemicist extraordinaire Christopher Hitchens have touched on topics ranging from national politics to the Iraq invasion to atheism. While loathing ignorance in all its forms, Hitchens routinely stomached the company of its greatest purveyors to see it appropriately ridiculed.

Sometimes, however, it is from an unexpected angle that stupidity regarding the religious enterprise makes itself known. Appearing as a panelist to discuss (in part) the life and death of Christopher Hitchens, Professor Anne-Marie Slaughter professed with an unbecoming smugness that to "believe there is no god is just as much an article of faith as to believe there is one." (paraphrased) (1) When ignorance of John Q. Church takes this form it is boorish and unsurprising; when an Oxford Ph.D. working at Princeton utters such inanities it smacks of dishonesty.

Governor Rick Perry Insults Entire Human Race

There has been some speculation that Gov. Rick Perry's promotion of and attendance at the prayer rally in Houston was a calculated move meant to win the support of Conservative Christian voters. [1]  While it was realized long ago that religious proclamations could prove quite useful to the political figures who uttered them [2], such an observation does not allow us to logically reject the possibility of sincerity.  Cynicism or sincerity?  One is not necessarily better than the other.

If Gov. Rick Perry's assertions were merely a cynical ploy, we would have every reason to be offended at the deception.  Such manipulation, while no doubt often employed, is unworthy of an elected official.  Gov. Perry's history, on the other hand, points in the other direction.

How many times have you said that phrase or heard your kids say it over and over again?  Most of us have had the experience of anxiously anticipating some future event.  When will we get there?  I expect a raise at my next evaluation;  When will I find the perfect mate;  Will the kids move out to attend college;  I am passed 60 but still do childish things - Will I ever be an adult?  I have experienced all of these events and thinking back on them brings back fond memories.  But let us turn our attention to a magnanimous event that hundreds of millions of people have been anticipating for a very long time.

This anxiously anticipated event just happens to be the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Flip of a Coin

In response to “Is there a true religion?” by Dallas Roark

Pascal, although a brilliant person in his day, had no more answers to the mystery of god anymore than Mohamed, Jesus Christ, David Koresh, Joseph Smith or any of the millions of other self proclaimed prophets and other promoters of religion.

Pascal’s criteria for a “true religion” and Pascal’s wager are both based on fallacious arguments and are extremely sophomoric as a test for the existence of god.  The answer cannot be had by the flip of a coin and the issue is not simply a wager that god exists or god does not exist.

Religious Oppression

There are thousands of examples of religious oppression throughout human kinds colorful past. A few examples are so outlandish that it is easy for anyone to recognize the oppression.  Take for instance the Christians being fed to the lions in the Roman coliseums or the Spanish Inquisition or the Salem witch trials.  Modern day examples of oppression are at times harder to recognize. The subtle nature of some issues tends to cause huge debates on whether there is oppression or not.  It is easier to see this religious prejudice when looking through the eyes of the one being oppressed.    If you were looking through the eyes of the religious majority, however, you would not necessarily see the oppression but might only think you are doing the work required by your particular brand of religion.

Creationism –vs- Evolution

Scientific evidence points to evolution as the creator of man.  However, texts from numerous religions claim some god as the creator of man.  Which one of these do you give credit to?

The creationism story claims God, an all knowing and all powerful entity decided to be the creator of the universe.  The earth and other planets were formed to supply the humans with a place to exist.  This fairy tale may sound glorious to small children, but the realization of absolute incompetent design is easy to point out after you remove the rose colored glasses.

How do you answer the question – “What does it mean to be an American?” Most Americans would agree this is a country where every citizen has the same rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We all have these same rights without regard to the color of your skin, your sex, your age, country of origin, political philosophy or religion.

Uh, well, maybe not that last one.

In our country a battle is brewing between those who wish to destroy the wall separating church and state and those that want to protect and strengthen the wall - the same wall that has for centuries protected the rights of all Americans to have the freedom to believe as they wish. The competing sides of this debate are using a plethora of tactics to stealthily maneuver in and out of government created loopholes and gray areas.

We have been a very loosely organized group over the last year and are slowly and methodically forming into a cohesive organization.

Our Mission is to let other freethinkers in our geographical area know that they are not alone in their beliefs or more importantly, their lack of belief. How we accomplish this mission: hosting a Meet-up.com site; holding regular weekly meetings; volunteering with ASPCA and High Plains Food Bank; hosting a freethoughtoasis.org web site. There are other types of events planned in the future for example: Jr. Freethinkers Club; hosting guest speakers; joining the Texas Adopt a Highway program; volunteering with other local charities.

We are all aware that words have a lot of power and I am very excited about some of the wording being used by one very high profile person, President Obama. The president gave a speech in Indonesia recently and he used the words “E Pluribus Unum” and tied those words to our country's national motto. Uh oh, the religious right is not very happy about that. There are many news stories covering this speech and can be easily found by an internet search. I have added one link to a letter from the Congressional Prayer Caucus complaining because the President did not use the words “in God We Trust” as being the official national motto.
